After 22 years of running our basketball program, I thought I had worked most of the kinks out. And then comes COVID. So, in some ways I feel like this is year one all over again. We realize there is no perfect plan that can guarantee that no one will be exposed, however, we are making changes and doing what we can to still offer an safe opportunity for your kids to develop their skills and have fun.
Please read the changes we are making and feel free to give us your feedback., If you know of something that we can do to make it better, please let us know.
If you register, and something changes before we start practices, you may request a refund. Since, the majority of the cost of registration is the player kit, once you use it, we cannot return it.
All registrations will be online and must be paid by credit card to complete the registration. If you are not able to register online, please contact the church office.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, we will NOT be having an Evaluation Day, as in previous years. Subsequently, you will need to provide additional information during registration, such as height (in inches) and playing skill level. Please note that the Playing Skill Level is different than when they are shooting baskets by themselves, or dribbling with no one pressuring them. This involves their ball handling skills; aggressiveness vs insecurity; and previous playing experience. On a scale of 1 – 10 (with 1 being very little skill to 10 having very strong skills), give us your best, honest, unbiased evaluation.
There are two REQUEST that you can make when you register:
You will have 1 one hour practice per week on either Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday evenings.
1-2 grade boys at 5:30pm; 3-4 grade boys at 6:30pm; and 5-6 grade boys at 7:30pm; 1-3 grade girls at 5:30pm; 4-6 grade girls 6:30pm
If you just CANNOT practice on ONE of those nights – because of work or other legitimate activity – then please indicate which night you cannot practice.
If you MUST practice at the SAME TIME AND NIGHT (not necessarily on the same team) as someone else, otherwise you will not be able to participate, then please select the carpool option.
PLEASE DO NOT request this unless it is a REAL NECESSITY. Just wanting to be on the same team as a friend is NOT a valid reason.
BOTH people needing to carpool together MUST indicate on their registration, the other person’s name. They must be the same gender, and in the same grade division. One carpool request per person.
We will try very hard to accommodate every NEED, but it is a HUGE challenge, and extremely time consuming, to try to meet everyone’s request. With between 250-300 players, it is next to impossible to fit siblings on the same night and honor “night exclusion”, and carpool request, and keep the teams balanced to similar skill and height. So please, do not keep someone from getting what they NEED, because of your request for CONVENIENCE..

We are going to have to allow for one and half hours for each game. The extra half hour is to disinfect the chairs, bleachers, bathrooms, etc. with medical grade, EPA approved Easy DECON in a “fogger”. So, our game will be stretched out longer.
As soon as the 8:00am games are finished, everyone associated with that game time will be asked to move, either to a picnic table outside (if the weather is nice), or into the foyer of the building next door, to hand out stars and snacks.
The group for the 9:00am game will need to wait in their cars, in the foyer next door, or outside, until we can disinfect/fog the gym from the previous game/crowd.
Everyone, except those who are playing or refereeing, will need to wear a mask when inside the buildings, and maintain as much social distancing as possible. This will be our biggest challenge and we realize that due to close quarters we cannot accomplish this as ideally as we would like.
Everyone needs to have their names on any personal items (bottles of water, insolated cups, jugs, snack boxes, clothing) and to keep theirs separated from other’s things.
We will fog balls, and equipment often and encourage everyone to hand sanitize a lot.
Beyond this we are not sure what else we can do. If the need for other procedures arise, we will adapt as seems best. We hope you will choose to participate this season but if you are not comfortable with these conditions we certainly understand.
We need two co-coaches per team. Upward has all kinds of resources – practice instructions, tutorials, skills and drills videos, game day substitution charts – all on an app. You can send emails to parents and much more. So, you do not need to have much experience or be a basketball wiz. We have all of the equipment at the gym. We just need people with character who will be good role models!
If you would like to be a co-coach, just click the BE A CO-COACH button to sign up.
